On Dec 20th 2019, concerned minds in the U. S. have made their grievances known through a letter written to the Attorney General. The letter became written to demonstrate their displeasure concerning the detainment of Mr Omoyele Sowore.

“Honorable Minister Abubakar Malami Minister of Justice and Honorable Attorney general, Federal Secretariat Complex, Abuja Federal Republic of Nigeria

Dear Mr. Attorney General:

We write to you concerning Mr. Omoyele Sowore, a New Jersey resident, who was arrested on August 3 and charged with treason, cash laundering and cyberstalking related to his call for demonstrations. We are deeply worried that set up criminal process and the rule of thumb of law aren’t being observed in his Case. We understand that the Nigerian Court two times ordered his release after he met the phrases of his bail, but the Nigerian Department of State Security (DSS) refused to comply with those orders till December 5. We also are instructed that the very next day he turned into rearrested, whilst appearing in the courtroom for what become speculated to be the start of his trial.

Disturbing films of a melee in court docket are circulating, which appear to expose armed agents inside the court, and Mr Sowore being located in a choke maintain, and then he become re-detained by DSS, although no new expenses have considering been filed to justify this re-detention. We apprehend that his case has given that been placed within your purview.

We are thrilled to stand along Nigeria as a democratic country. As the biggest democracy in Africa, Nigeria has an opportunity and obligation to function a version for following the mounted rule of law below its own Constitution. And as with all superior democracies, this consists of the lawful utility of prosecutorial powers and actions, in addition to the ultimate compliance with judicial rulings. In the case of Mr. Sowore’s re-detention, this does not appear to have happened. Under President Muhammadu Buhari’s and your leadership, Nigeria must work to uphold the primary human rights of its citizens together with their freedom of expression and political affiliation, without fear of government reprisal and harassment; in particular for opposing or dissenting voices. As your country works to shield the safety of your citizens such as actively countering threats of terrorism and extremist violence, it will quality serve Nigeria’s pastimes to guard and uphold the very criminal structures that offer stability and open dialogue.

Mr Attorney General, we request that you take immediate steps to ensure the safety and security of Mr Sowore even as he’s held in government custody: work to facilitate a fast and fair decision to the present day instances of his re-detention; and make certain that he gets a legally sound and credible trial, steady with Nigeria’s mounted judicial lawsuits and the rulings that follow. Indefinite detention in defiance of court orders and/or unfairly accomplishing Mr Sowore’s prison prosecution will only serve to tarnish Nigeria’s international popularity and its status as a leading African democracy. Doing so dangers empowering different voices who would are seeking to work against you.

Your leadership in facilitating genuine progress toward respect for the rule of thumb of law can retain to pave the way for nearer ties between the United States and Nigeria for years to come, strengthening continued financial growth, development, and security cooperation. We urge you to reveal management in this example and on these critical issue Sincerely”

Mr Omoyele Sowore who called for revolution due to the fact he said Nigeria’s elections were not credible, which accompanied the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari. He has because been charged with treason, money laundering and “cyberstalking” for allegedly sharing false and insulting information about President Buhari. Which, he denies all the prices. The US State Department’s role follows comparable condemnation by pinnacle American lawmakers like Cory Booker and Bob Menendez, who both known as for the honor of Sowore’s rights and his instantaneous launch.
