In less than 24 hours since the Nasarawa State Government declared a 24-hour curfew in Karu Local Government Area of the state, no fewer than 68 persons have been arrested for allegedly violating the state government order aimed at preventing the spread of the deadly Coronaviirus across the state.
This was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Nasarawa state command, ASP Nansel Rahman in an interview with newsmen in Lafia.
It will be recalled that on Wednesday, 1st April 2020, Nasarawa state Governor Abdullahi Sule announced a 24-hour curfew in Karu Local Government Area of the state, due to its proximity to the Federal Capital Territory ( ABUJA) which has confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus.
A restricted movement rule from 8 pm to 6 am was also pronounced for the rest of the state, which took effect from the early hours of today (Thursday).
Unfortunately, in less than 24 hours since the new laws take effect, 68 people have already defaulted and were apprehended by the police.
The command PRO stated that 48 persons out of 68 were apprehended in Karu local government area of the state. ”the violators have all been charged to court to serve as a deterrent to others,” he said.
“A total number of 68 suspects were arrested to that effect while 59 have been charged to court, the remaining 9 suspects will also be charged to court at the end of the investigation,” he added.
The Nasarawa state police command clamped down on the violators of such order in Lafia metropolis, adding that violation of an order duly promulgated by a public servant goes contrary to section 152 of the Penal code.”
