In a significant breakthrough, the police in Oyo State have successfully eliminated the leader of a notorious armed robbery gang and apprehended three additional suspects.

The spokesman for the state police command, SP Adewale Osifeso, made this announcement during a press briefing held at the command’s headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, on Friday.

The apprehended criminals were responsible for a series of crimes, including the murder of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ogunleye Daniel during an invasion of his residence in the Ori-Agogo area of Odo-Ona Kekere, Ibadan, on April 29. The armed robbers targeted unsuspecting residents, seizing their valuables and instilling fear in the community.

Following the heinous incident, detectives from the State Criminal Investigations Department’s Anti-Robbery section launched a swift and thorough investigation. They managed to track down the suspects by using a mobile phone recovered at the scene of the crime. In a courageous encounter, the police neutralized the gang leader, known as “Ogun,” who allegedly shot and killed ASP Ogunleye Daniel.

During the subsequent interrogation, the arrested suspects voluntarily confessed to their involvement in the crimes. They also revealed the identity of their criminal receiver, referred to as “Iya Alaye.” The police promptly located and arrested her in the Oranyan area of Ibadan.

Various items were recovered from the suspects, including two Samsung phones, a 1999 model Hyundai Elantra vehicle, a cut-to-size locally-made barrel, two wristwatches, two wedding bands, herbal concoctions, as well as gold and criminal charms. These pieces of evidence serve as a testament to the gang’s nefarious activities and criminal intentions.

The successful operation and subsequent arrests highlight the dedication and professionalism of the Oyo State Police Command. The law enforcement agency remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of residents throughout the state. The paraded suspects will face the full weight of the law, and further investigations are underway to identify any possible accomplices.

The Oyo State Police Command urges residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities promptly, and cooperate with law enforcement agencies in their efforts to curb crime in the state. The elimination of this dangerous armed robbery gang is a testament to the relentless commitment of the police force to maintain law and order, bringing criminals to justice and creating a safe environment for all citizens.
