FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Stands Firm on Sacking Amidst Tears, Emotions

In a bold and unyielding response to the recent uproar following the removal of the Managing Director of the Abuja Urban Mass Transport Company (AUMTCO), Najeeb Abdulsalam, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), remains resolute in his commitment to do what he believes is right for the people.

Abdulsalam found himself among the 21 heads of parastatals, agencies, and companies of the FCT Administration who faced termination from their positions at the hands of Minister Wike on Wednesday. This decision, although met with tears and heartfelt emotions from AUMTCO staff in a viral video, appears unwavering to the determined minister.

Speaking on the matter, Minister Wike dismissed sentiment and emotion, emphasizing his dedication to the welfare and interests of FCT residents and all Nigerians. He questioned the efficacy of Abdulsalam’s tenure, pointing out that if the former Managing Director had truly excelled, the evidence would be visible in the operations of the organization.

“No sentiment, no emotions will be considered when we are doing what is right. We will do the right thing for the interest of the people,” asserted Minister Wike. He remained steadfast, unswayed by the emotional appeal witnessed in the viral video. “What bothers us is the reality on the ground,” he added, underlining the importance of tangible results.

The Minister’s remarks also served as a reminder to political appointees that change is an inherent part of public service. He urged them to be prepared for transitions, stating, “Even as a minister, I can be relieved of my position now. You don’t need to cry; some other people will come and all we pray for is, let us get the best.”
