Tensions within the Labour Party (LP) have reached a boiling point as the party’s National Treasurer, Mrs. Oluchi Oparah, publicly demanded accountability from the National Chairman, Julius Abure, over alleged mismanagement of party funds totaling over N3.5 billion.
Addressing the press in Abuja on Monday, Oparah accused Abure of obstructing her from fulfilling her constitutional duties of overseeing the party’s finances. She claimed that despite repeated requests, Abure has refused to provide transparency regarding the utilization of funds generated from the sale of expression of interest and nomination forms for the 2023 general elections, as well as other fundraisers.
Expressing grave concern over what she termed “egregious financial mismanagement and corruption,” Oparah emphasized her obligation to uphold principles of transparency, accountability, and justice within the party. She lamented the failure of internal mechanisms to hold Abure accountable for his alleged misconduct, asserting that his unchecked power has undermined the party’s integrity.
Oparah’s public plea for accountability underscores the deep-seated divisions and internal strife plaguing the Labour Party. The demand for transparency in financial matters highlights the urgent need for ethical leadership and adherence to democratic principles within political organizations.
