Born on August 22, 1966, Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe’s legacy as a visionary banker and philanthropist continues to inspire generations. Hailing from Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, Wigwe’s remarkable journey is etched in the annals of Nigeria’s banking history.

A graduate of Accounting from the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), Wigwe’s career trajectory took shape at Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), where he collaborated with Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede to acquire Access Bank, catapulting it from obscurity to prominence.

Under Wigwe’s leadership, Access Bank evolved into a global financial powerhouse, transcending borders to become a leading financial conglomerate. His unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation propelled the bank’s expansion beyond the African continent, cementing its position as a top-tier institution.

Beyond his professional achievements, Wigwe was deeply engaged in community development and youth empowerment initiatives. In 2016, he was honored by the Boys’ Brigade as the State Patron for Lagos State Council, recognizing his exemplary contributions to society.

Wigwe’s dedication to service earned him national acclaim, culminating in his investiture as a Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) by President Muhammadu Buhari in October 2022.

Tragically, Wigwe’s life was cut short on Friday, February 9, 2024, following a helicopter crash in the United States of America. His untimely demise sent shockwaves through the banking industry and beyond, leaving behind a profound void.

As tributes pour in from colleagues, friends, and admirers, Herbert Wigwe’s indelible imprint on Nigeria’s banking landscape and his enduring legacy as a beacon of integrity and innovation will continue to resonate for years to come.
