In a ceremony brimming with national pride, President Bola Tinubu has bestowed upon the members of the Super Eagles national team and their officials the esteemed national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) in recognition of their stellar performance at the recently concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.
The federal government, represented by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has also extended its appreciation by granting each member of the team a plot of land. Additionally, they will each receive a block of flats, with the locations yet to be announced.
President Tinubu, during a special reception for the National Football Team, lauded their exemplary display on the field, highlighting their role in fostering unity and national pride through their remarkable achievements. Despite finishing as runners-up, he urged the team to hold their heads high and to continue exhibiting the same spirit of resilience and determination in future endeavors.
William Troost-Ekong, the team’s vice-captain and recipient of the Most Valuable Player award, expressed heartfelt gratitude to President Tinubu for the recognition and support extended to the team. Troost-Ekong, echoing the sentiments of his teammates, conveyed a collective desire to bring home a trophy in future tournaments, underscoring their unwavering commitment to excellence and success on the global stage.
