the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has offered to pay the medical bills of a three-year-old girl, Halima Abdullahi, from Katsina State, who was born with a congenital disorder commonly called cleft lip.
The Speaker made the offer after a non-governmental organisation, the Queen Dijah Women and Children Initiative, drew his attention to the girl’s plight during his visit to the Internally Displaced Persons’ camp in the Batsari Local Government Area of the state.
The founder of the NGO, Khadijah Saulawa, confirmed the development to Northern City News on Thursday.
She said Gbajabiamila had directed that the treatment should commence without any further delay.
She commended the Speaker’s decision to settle the medical bills of the girl.
Saulawa said, “The Speaker directed his medical aide to link up with the NGO for details of the victim to ensure proper planning so that the operation for little Halima can be done.
“We at the Queen Dijah Foundation are impressed with the spontaneous response of the Speaker.
“It shows he is a man of the people, who cares about the welfare of Nigerians, like that of little Halimah.
“A good leader can be identified through his ability to listen, show concern and care for the masses he or she represents in government.”
