Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi sentenced popular actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin to six months in prison or a hefty fine of N300,000 for tampering with Naira notes during a social event in Lagos.
The actress, initially pleading not guilty to two-count charges brought forth by the EFCC, changed her plea to guilty as evidence mounted against her. The charges stemmed from her actions at a social occasion on January 28, 2023, where she sprayed Naira notes, violating the Central Bank Act, 2007.
Prosecution counsel Z.B. Atiku presented evidence, including an extra-judicial statement from the defendant, a forensic report of her phone, and videos capturing the act. The defence pleaded for leniency, emphasizing Omoseyin’s status as a first-time offender, a mother, and her remorse.
Justice Aneke handed down the verdict, giving Omoseyin the option of a N300,000 fine, effective immediately. The actress, arrested by ICPC operatives after a viral video showcased her actions, claimed she received the new Naira notes from unidentified fans at the party.
Alongside the sentence, Omoseyin’s Range Rover SUV was confiscated at the point of her arrest.
