The vigilance of the Ondo State Security Network, known as the Amotekun Corps, has proven crucial as they successfully intercepted trucks laden with arms, dangerous weapons, and charms attempting to enter the state from the northern region of Nigeria.
During operations conducted across three local government areas of the state, the Amotekun Corps apprehended the suspects involved in the illicit arms smuggling. Parading the suspects in Akure, the state capital, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, the commander of the Amotekun Corps, revealed that the agency had been closely monitoring the influx of suspicious individuals into forest reserves and other areas of the state in recent weeks.
Adeleye disclosed that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had issued directives to prioritize the protection of buses transporting pupils in the state, prompting heightened surveillance measures.
Describing the modus operandi of the suspects, Adeleye explained, “A couple of weeks ago, we started having a very heavy influx of strange people within our forest reserve areas and the Ondo State territory. Majority of these people who claimed that they were coming into the state as hunters, were arrested around the black spots where we have robbery operations and kidnapping in the local governments where they were nabbed.”
The intercepted suspects had allegedly concealed weapons, bags of Indian hemp, and cutlasses beneath their vehicles, claiming to hail from various parts of the country.
Adeleye emphasized that the 149 apprehended suspects have undergone profiling, with ongoing investigations into their activities.
