President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his democracy day broadcast on Wednesday has said that he will soon send a new minimum wage bill to the National Assembly. President Bola Tinubu has appointed retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Hashimu Argungu, as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC). Argungu replaces former Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, who was appointed to the position by former President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2023. The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, June 12 as public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo in a statement on Tuesday by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Aishetu Ndayako, congratulated Nigerians on the celebration. A group of 35 lawmakers, known as Reformers, has proposed major alterations to the 1999 Constitution, including the introduction of a six-year single tenure for the President and the governors. The lawmakers are also proposing an alteration to the Constitution to create two vice presidents from the southern and northern parts of Nigeria. The Organised Labour under the aegis of The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), has said it will not accept any N62,000 or N100,000 “starvation wage” as the minimum wage for Nigerian workers. It insisted on N250,000, being its latest demand at the last meeting of the Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage on Friday, as the living wage for an average Nigerian worker. FG Offers N62,000 As New Minimum Wage
The Federal Government and the organised private sector have increased their offer for the new minimum wage to N62,000 from the earlier N60,000 following hours of intense negotiation on Friday. However, organised labour is proposing N250,000 which is a shift from its earlier N494,000. This brings to and end the deliberations on the new minimum wage by the tripartite committee set up by the the Federal Government after several months.
