The National Leader of the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has alleged a plot by Lagos State to colonise Kano State and the rest of northern Nigeria. Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and critic of the Tinubu administration’s policies, spoke at the convocation of Skyline University, Kano, where he alleged that plans are underway to redirect taxes from Kano State to Lagos State.

“Today, we are aware that the Lagos young men are working so hard to impose taxes and take away our taxes from Kano and this part of the country to Lagos,” Kwankwaso stated. “Even the telephones that we make or register here in Kano, efforts are there to take all the taxes to Lagos. Even our sons and daughters who have brought factories, many of them here in Kano and northern Nigeria, and even banks, somehow, are forced to take their headquarters to Lagos because taxes will now have to go to Lagos,” the ex-governor alleged.

The 2023 presidential candidate of the NNPP added, “Today we can see clearly that there is a lot of effort from the Lagos axis to polarise this part of the country…Lagos would not even allow us to choose our Emir.”

He further rebuked the Tinubu administration over the widening gap between the rich and the poor, stating that “we have seen the efforts of some people to make the poor poorer and the rich richer, and I believe this is more dangerous.”

He called on Northerners in the National Assembly to remain vigilant and steadfast and to protect the interests of Northern Nigeria.

“At this moment, I would like to call all our National Assembly members to keep their eyes open so that they don’t do anything that would cheat the people of northern Nigeria, especially here in Kano,” Kwankwaso urged.

Reflecting on past experiences in the National Assembly, he noted that, “we are witnesses to what happened during the first term, 1999 to 2000, where our members of the National Assembly were bribed and were treated into collecting huge sums of money to support offshore in this country.

“That law dealt a huge blow on our economy, not only here in Northern Nigeria but in all other states,” he declared.

In the meantime, the new Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusif Abdullahi Ata, has cautioned him against “making contemptuous statements on the ongoing Kano Emirate Council legal tussles.”

He further implored him to “refrain from making statements that could deepen divisions in the country and lead him to contempt of court with regards to the Kano Emirate Council legal actions.”

Ata noted that “the issue of the Kano Emirate is still pending in court” and warned that Kwankwaso’s comments might be perceived as contempt of court.

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has expressed concerns that the rising cost of living and arbitrary hike in the pump price of petrol amid scarcity has contributed to the number of fewer vehicles plying the Nigerian roads.

Falana made the observation when he was featured as a guest on Sunday’s Channels Television’s Politics Today.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria also disclosed that it is high time the ‘monumental fraud’ bedeviling fuel importation in Nigeria was exposed.

His concerns come in the wake of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited’s confession that its substantial debt to suppliers is endangering the sustainable fuel supply.

The NNPCL disclosed this in a statement posted on its official X handle on Sunday.

Among other things, the corporation highlighted that the financial strain is placing significant pressure on its operations and threatening the stability of fuel supplies.

But Falana lamented that there are so many things the NNPCL and the Federal Government are not telling Nigerians.

He said, “How many people have bought a car in the last one and a half years, even second-hand cars (in Nigeria)? The point I am making is that the number of vehicles on the road has been reduced. Yet, we were told that during the days of boom, the NNPCL was subsidising 68 million litres of fuel per day.

“Now that there are problems, scarcity, and poverty everywhere, no new vehicles on the road, we are still paying for 68 million litres of fuel. Whereas before this regime came on board, the Comptroller General of Customs challenged the NNPCL during a Senate public hearing to pay for the amount of fuel that is said to be smuggled out of the country.”

While backing the call, Falana said emerging reports have since suggested that the NNPCL is not telling Nigerians everything it claimed to know about the smuggling of crude in the country.

According to him, smugglers need 2,000 petrol tankers to scoop away the volume of fuel the corporation claimed is being stolen frequently.

“This is because we man the borders and you will need about 2,000 tankers to take out the amount of fuel the NNPCL claimed was being smuggled out.

“So what has changed? This is the time to expose the monumental fraud that has characterized the importation of fuel,” he stated.

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday, condemned a post made by @Lagospedia on X (formerly Twitter) that called on the Igbo to vacate Lagos and the South-West. The post by the user on July 27, 2024, asking Lagosians to brace for a massive #IgboMustGo protest from August 20 to 30, 2024, has since generated controversy on social media.

The media aide to Governor Sanwo-Olu, Gboyega Akosile, in a statement, noted that the governor and indeed, the Lagos State Government “wish to distance themselves from the reckless, divisive and dangerous rhetoric, saying Lagos remains home to every Nigerian citizen regardless of their ethnic nationality.”

According to him, Sanwo-Olu views the post as not only reckless and divisive but also an attempt to sow a seed of discord between the Yoruba in the South-West and other tribes, “especially those who have made Lagos their permanent place of abode.

“The governor appeals to Lagosians not to allow any person or group of individuals to create tensions in the state, calling on the security agencies to promptly investigate those behind the handle and bring them to justice.

“Mr Governor enjoins Lagosians to ignore the post and any post of that nature, promising to double his efforts towards ensuring lasting peace in the state.”

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has denied supporting the sit at home order declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on May 30th.

Otti had through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, stated that his administration is not interested in going into unnecessary confrontation with the promoters of the May 30 sit- at- home order in honour of those killed during the Nigeria civil war. He further stated that people have a right to mourn their dead.

However, the state government in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, explained that the Governor did not make the statement attributed to him, nor does it reflect his personal views or those of the state government under his leadership.

He disclosed that the officer in question has said he was quoted out of context, while the Governor has ordered a full investigation into the comment which is at variance with Government’s posture towards IPOB and other organisations or persons seeking to obstruct the rights of the citizens to freedom of movement.

The state government urged the public is hereby advised to totally disregard the comment.

The statement read; “The attention of the Abia State Government has been drawn to a widely circulating statement purportedly made by His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, the Governor of Abia State on the order allegedly issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for a Sit at home protest on May 30th, 2024.

“In the statement, His Excellency was said to have spoken through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, and alleged to have implied support for the sit-at-home order. The Abia State Government hereby categorically and unequivocally states that His Excellency did not make the statement attributed to him, nor does it reflect his personal views or those of the Abia State Government under his leadership.

Even though the officer in question has said he was quoted out of context, the Governor has ordered a full investigation into the egregious comment which is at variance with government’s posture towards IPOB and other organisations or persons seeking to obstruct the rights of the citizens to freedom of movement.

“The public is hereby advised to totally disregard the comments in the purported statement.

“Prior to, and since taking office as Governor, His Excellency has consistently, publicly and uncompromisingly maintained that no individual or organization has the right to deny citizens of their sacrosanct right to freedom of movement, freedom to earn livelihood and freedom to pursue their endeavours in an atmosphere of peace, security and with all the assurances of citizenship.

“His Excellency’s policy of zero-tolerance for criminality and civil disturbances under any guise whatsoever has been backed by very strategic investments to keep our communities and neighbourhoods safe and secure, resulting in Abia State being ranked amongst the safest in the country. Under this administration, incessant kidnapping for huge ransoms, robbery and in some cases, murder have been reduced drastically.

“It is unfortunate, regrettable and deeply concerning that a few criminals and conflict merchants have orchestrated the recent callous murder of members of our Armed Forces in Obikabia, Obingwa LGA. Like we had indicated in our response to the tragic attack, we are working with the security agencies and well-meaning citizens to unmask these criminals and we shall not rest until they are arrested and made to face the full force of the law.

“Having earlier placed a N25 million bounty for information leading to the apprehension of the perpetrators of the killings, the following secure number – 07071902444, has been activated in the Office of the Governor for the members of the public to freely call or text with useful information.”

A former Central Bank Governor (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, is set to be reportedly reinstated as the Emir of Kano. Naija News understands that this follows the passage of a new law by the State House of Assembly which abolished four emirates created in addition to the Emir of Kano.

The emirates were created under a controversial law in 2019 by the administration of former Governor of the state, Abdullahi Ganduje. According to LEADERSHIP, there is no official statement yet on Sanusi’s reinstatement, but sources privy to the situation told the newspaper that Sanusi will be in Kano on Friday.

The sources said, “

So certainly with the passage of the Bill, Sanusi automatically stands reinstated. No need for confirmation, the thing is to wait for the governor to assent to it.” Naija News earlier reported that the State Assembly passed a bill titled, ‘The Kano State Emirates Councils (Repeal) Bill, 2024’, which dissolved the establishment of the additional emirates. This was announced by the Senior Special Assistant on Digital Media to the state governor, Tuwita on X, stating that the bill was passed after it scaled third reading before the lawmakers.

The new law has abrogated the creation of the emirates created in 2019 and the restoration of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano Emirate. Recall that the law was first amended in 2019 amid a rift between Ganduje and Sanusi, which led to the removal of the former CBN boss as the Emir of Kano. The first amendment broke the Kano Emirate into five with the creation of Rano, Karaye, Gaya and Bichi emirates, and the appointment of first-class emirs for the new emirates, eventually culminating in the deposition of the then-Emir of Kano.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, says the Abuja Light Rail is ready for commercial operations.

Wike, who stated this after he inspected the project, in Abuja on Monday, added that 15 million dollars, translating to more than N10 billion was expended on the rehabilitation project.

He assured FCT residents that the light rail, also known as the Abuja Metro Line, would be inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu for commercial operations on May 27.

“Thank God Almighty that we are good to go. We are ready and you can see the facilities have been installed.

“We are happy; very very happy, and we thank God the promise President Tinubu made has been kept.

He said that Tinubu had promised to deliver the metro line to Nigerians within one year in office, adding that as a foot soldier, he has no excuse but to ensure that the promise became a reality.

He said that the operationalisation of the metro line was a testimony of the reality of Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.

The minister said that the project was delivered because of the overwhelming support of President Tinubu.

“We are doing well because Mr President has given us every necessary support. Assuming we are not getting the support from him, this would not have been a reality today,” he said.

He, however, identified facilities that were omitted during the design of the project, particular air conditioning in the passengers waiting room and elevator.

He said: “We are happy with the project. It is just that we identify one or two things that were omitted during the design.

“But we believe that during the full operations of the train, some of the things will be taken into consideration.

“Particularly, I believe that as a standard metro line, where the passengers will be waiting before boarding the trains, there should be air conditioners.

“I also thought that some of the stations should have had an elevator for those who are very old and those who may not have the strength to walk or climb the staircase.

“Apart from that, I think we are happy with the work that has been done and we believe Nigerians will be happy, particularly the residents of FCT.”

He pointed out that the absence of the air conditioning and the elevator would not prevent the full operation of the metro line but make the passengers more comfortable.

The minister also said that access roads have also been constructed to link communities to the train stations.

According to him, without the access roads to the train station, there will be no need for the metro line, otherwise, how will the people from the various communities access the stations?

NAN reports that the project was originally designed to find concrete solution to transportation challenges – heavy traffic and hold-up in the FCT and its environs.(NAN)

A former Secretary to the Governmentoftge Federation (SGF), Engr. Babachir David Lawal, has given his opinion on the leadership style of the present administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Lawal described Tinubu’s personality as one marked by an “I know it all” attitude, which he identified as a significant character flaw.

Babachir in his argument said that while Tinubu is often regarded as a master strategist, his overconfidence and perceived self-sufficiency have led to flawed decision-making.

According to him, this has resulted in Tinubu overestimating his capabilities, particularly in making substantial decisions.

Speaking further he said,

“I always say this; I’m sorry to say this, but I will repeat it. The personality of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is that ‘I know it all.’ This is his character flaw. He knows it; he’s smart; he thinks he’s smart; he’s intelligent; they call him a master strategist, and from my own personal knowledge of him, that was what drove that possibility and that outcome, and now it has been shown that he has failed in his evaluation of his own capabilities for taking such huge decisions.

“If he had that competence, and if this cabinet has the competence, even after he has done that, they have had sufficient time to work out mitigating strategies.”

Engr. Babachir Lawal, who also spoke on State of the Nation on Trust TV’s Daily Politics, said Nigeria had collapsed after the swearing in of President Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023.

He said the shocking announcement of fuel subsidy removal by him on the day of inauguration plunged the country into economic malady, stating that the policy was launched before the cabinet was assembled.

According to Lawal, the announcement of fuel subsidy removal led to increase in the transportation which is basically the engine of business for both the rich and common man in Nigeria.

Describing the action taken on May 29, 2023, Lawal said the non-existence of the cabinet and the Federal Executive Council, at the time, to address the consequences of such a harsh policy was the undoing of Tinubu, leading to a total collapse of the country.

Speaking on the Trust TV programme, he reiterated that I, “I can only repeat what I said before. I’ve spoken on this before. First of all, I did say one time you came into government on the day you were inaugurated,” he said.

“After swearing in you embark on the first major policies that are very impactful on the lives of the society. It is like a cowboy, or macho man removing subsidy. At that time, he didn’t have a minister of planning, that should plan the outcome, the consequences to take care.

“You don’t have a minister of finance who will calculate the impact of this on the society. You did not even have the Federal Executive Council that will approve that, you have nothing. As at that time, nobody to advise, nobody to break out ‘what ifs’”.

Speaking further, he said, “So immediately after that inauguration, Nigeria collapsed. It is like a balloon. Nigeria fell down. It deflated completely. Immediately transportation (fare) tripled,” he noted.

“That week! I used to buy animal feed for my cows from Zaria, I used to pay N270,000 per truck. Immediately that week, I couldn’t buy anymore, because transportation alone was going to cost me N1 million,” he explained from his personal experience as a farmer.

“I couldn’t afford it because the cost of fuel just jumped up. Everything. Last week I bought some equipment for my farm. I wanted to transport it from Kano, they were asking me to pay N3 million to transport three tractors and only to be put in a trailer. One trailer carrying three tractors!. Everything has gone up. So that policy alone crashed everything.”
