The Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has raised a pressing call for President Bola Tinubu to swiftly address the prevailing challenges hampering stable electricity supply in Nigeria.
The party contends that an enhanced power supply, both in urban and rural areas, would alleviate the difficulties brought about by the removal of fuel subsidies in the country.
Olumide Adesoyin, State Chairman of the LP, issued the call through a statement on Saturday, asserting that improved electricity distribution would alleviate the burden on citizens and businesses due to the removal of fuel subsidies.
Adesoyin highlighted the detrimental effects of generator usage on enterprises and the overall well-being of Nigerians.
The statement emphasized the urgency of addressing the metering gap in the nation, citing it as a pivotal solution to the existing challenges in the power sector.
Adesoyin emphasized the critical role a developed power sector plays in Nigeria’s global economic positioning, citing the country’s substantial Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of approximately US$500 billion. He noted that Nigeria’s potential as a leading African economy could be further bolstered by resolving the persistent power issues.
Adesoyin underscored the importance of President Tinubu’s role in creating a favorable policy environment to attract increased private investment in power generation, which in turn would facilitate the modernization of transmission infrastructure.
The LP Chairman additionally advocated for a diversified energy portfolio, with an emphasis on renewable and clean energy sources. He urged the government to consider nuclear energy as an option, citing the examples set by countries such as South Africa, Iran, and Turkey that have successfully established nuclear power plants.
