In an appearance on Arise TV’s ‘The Morning Show’ on Thursday, Ned Nwoko, the lawmaker representing Delta North Senatorial District, defended his proposal for a bill allowing civilians to own and carry firearms. Nwoko expressed his belief that lawlessness is rampant in the country, citing incidents of kidnapping by armed robbers, militants, herdsmen, and others.
Nwoko criticized the perceived incapability and lack of funding of the police, asserting that citizens receive insufficient support from law enforcement agencies. As a member of the Senate Committee On Police Matters, he highlighted the inadequacy of the police force in terms of equipment and funding.
He also addressed the military’s efforts against terrorism, noting the significant financial investment made without commensurate progress. Nwoko emphasized the desperate need for effective security solutions, leading to his proposal for a bill allowing Nigerians to carry firearms for self-defense.
“The idea of a bill to enable Nigerians to carry firearms and defend themselves is born out of desperation. The fact is that people do not have the type of protection they need,” Nwoko stated during the interview.
