Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has sounded the alarm over the increasing wave of high-profile crimes, including killings and abductions, in the South-West region. In response to these security challenges, Afenifere has called on governors in the region to enhance the capabilities of the regional security outfit, Amotekun Corps, to effectively combat the menace and safeguard the lives and property of citizens.
During a courtesy visit to Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, in the aftermath of recent tragic incidents, including the killing of two traditional rulers and the abduction of school children and teachers, Afenifere emphasized the urgent need for proactive measures to address the escalating insecurity.
Chief Korede Duyile, speaking on behalf of Afenifere, underscored the importance of collaborative efforts among South-West governors to confront the criminal elements threatening the region. He emphasized the necessity of arming Amotekun operatives with sophisticated weapons to counter the activities of marauders effectively.
In response, Governor Oyebanji condemned the heinous crimes and assured Afenifere of the government’s commitment to apprehending and prosecuting the perpetrators. He pledged to work with other governors in the region to devise comprehensive strategies aimed at enhancing security and restoring peace across the state.
Despite legal constraints surrounding the arming of Amotekun, Governor Oyebanji affirmed his administration’s determination to prioritize the security of the people, promising to explore all available avenues to defend the populace against criminal elements.
