The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Ali Pantami, has expressed the resolve of the Federal government to move the nation’s economy to a digital economy. 6 dead in mining pit collapse in Jos
Six persons died as a mining pit collapsed on Tuesday at Zawan Community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau. Mr Gwottson Fom, Member representing Jos South Constituency in the State House of Assembly confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday. Fom said that the ages of the victims ranged from 20 to 27, describing the incident as “sad and unfortunate.’’ A NAN correspondent, who visited the area reports that many others sustained injury in the incident. The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Command in Edo has deployed 800 personnel for special operations during the yuletide. Mr Makinde Ayinla, the state Commandant of the corps, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Wednesday. Ayinla said that the deployment was in line with the Commandant General of the Corps directive to all commands to ensure a crime-free celebration in their areas during the period. FIRS Gives 7-Day Notice to Tax Defaulters
By Tony Obiechina, ABUJA The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) on Tuesday served a 7-day notice to tax defaulters, with a warning that it will soon begin nationwide tax enforcement to bring tax defaulters to book. The Acting Executive Chairman of FIRS, Abiodun Aina in a notification to taxpayers on Tuesday informed them of the plan by the Service to begin tax enforcement against such defaulters should they continue to fail in fulfilling their tax obligations. The Supreme Court on Wednesday affirmed the election victory of Seyi Makinde as Governor of Oyo State. In a unanimous judgment, the Apex Court found merit in the appeal filed by Mr Makinde that the majority judgment of the Appeal Court was a miscarriage of justice. The Supreme Court has affirmed the election of Nasir El-Rufai as Kaduna State governor and Abdullahi Sule as Nasarawa state governor. In a unanimous judgment on Wednesday, delivered by Justice Centus Nweze, the appeal filed by Mr Isa Ashiru of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenging the election of El-Rufai is lacking in merit and it is therefore dismissed. Prince Adewale Oyekan, son of late Oba of Lagos, Oba Adeyinka Oyekan, was on Monday sentenced to death by an Ikeja High Court over the murder of a 62-year-old businesswoman, Alhaja Sikirat Ekun. The trial began on April 14, 2015. Oyekan was sentenced alongside a domestic staff, Lateef Balogun. The duo had been in custody for seven years after strangling Ekun and throwing her corpse into a well in her home.
