Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha will on Tuesday, November 26 be engaging the Nigerian Correctional Services on issues of proper establishment of Borstal Training Institutions in the state.

The 3- day event which is being organized by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Information & Advocacy, Ms Adaora Onyechere, will be holding at the premises of the Nigerian Correctional Services (formerly Nigerian Prison Services) Headquarters, Okigwe from Tuesday, November 26 to Thursday 28, 2019 by 11 am each day.

The 3-day programme focusing on the Reformation & Reorientation Program for Juvenile Offenders will also be attended by His Grace, Most. Rev. A.J.V Obinna, Archbishop of Owerri Diocese who is the Special Guest of Honour of the occasion.

The Reformation and Reorientation Program is in partnership with the Nigerian Correctional Services even as
Gov. Ihedioha is expected to make case for the immediate and proper establishment of Borstal Training Institutions in Imo state.

According to a UNDP survey, over 40% of Nigeria’s population is less than 18years old.

Presently, there are only 3 Borstal Training Institutions in Nigeria located in Kaduna, Ilorin, and Abeokuta, with none in the whole of the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

Borstal Institutions are Homes where juvenile offenders are remanded and given both educational and vocational training to rehabilitate and reform them before integration into society.
