By Udo Akam-Alo, ABAKALIKI

Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi, has distributed palliative materials and Personal Protective types of equipment (PPE) to Doctors and other health workers in charge of the COVID-19 patients at the treatment centre in Abakaliki.

While handing over the protective materials, Governor Umahi represented by his Special Assistant on Vocational Education, Barr. Adaeze Nwaji, noted that the state government is concerned about the wellbeing of the Doctors/health workers who take greater risks in managing the COVID-19 patients.

Nwaji described the health workers as Heroes, saying that they have shown greater commitment in collaboration with the state government to curtail the spread of the virus and further expressed hope for more engagement of Doctors in the Nigerian hospitals.

“Doctors are our heroes, especially in this period of COVID-19, they have worked tirelessly in trying to protect those who are at the treatment centres. They are very committed and courageous to assist the government to end the spread of COVID-19.

“It is because of this that the governor said we should give them these scrubs and that if they need more, they will tell us. Our frontline health workers should be taken care of.

“We are hoping that there will be more engagement of more Doctors in various hospitals in Nigeria to assist government at all levels to end COVID-19,” she said.

However, Barr. Adaeze said that the state government directed the department of fashion and designing of the vocational College to design the PPEs for the health workers as a means to ensure their protection and avert the spread of the pandemic.

On his own part, the Head of COVID-19 Medical Team at the treatment centre, Dr. Sunday Ucha, lauded the governor for providing palliatives and other medical facilities to enable the health workers to handle the COVID-19 patients and protect themselves too.

He solicited the state government to extend the gesture to other health workers beyond the treatment centre and to make more resources available to the Vocational college to enable them to provide more PPEs.

“We thank the state governor for providing these scrubs and other health facilities within this period of COVID-19. We wish to commend his efforts so far.

“We wish that the state government will provide more of this to our health workers in other places.

“We appeal to the governor to provide more resources to the vocational college to enable them to make more of this PPE to us.” Dr. Ucha stated.

He further called on other state governors to emulate Governor Umahi’s attitude in handling the dreaded virus.

“We also want to thank Umahi on the way he is tackling this COVID-19 in the state. We call on other state governors to come and learn from Ebonyi,” he stated.
