Labour Party Treasurer Denies Misappropriation Allegations, Calls Suspension Premeditated

Mrs. Oluchi Opara, the suspended National Treasurer of the Labour Party, has vehemently denied allegations of misappropriating campaign funds, asserting that her suspension was premeditated and violated the party’s rules and procedures.

Opara’s rebuttal comes in response to her suspension by the national leadership of the Labour Party (LP) for six months, following her claim that the party’s National Chairman, Abure, mismanaged over N3 billion out of the N3.5 billion raised for the 2023 campaigns.

Disputing the allegations, Opara criticized the disciplinary action against her, asserting that it lacked adherence to due process and procedural fairness. She emphasized that the purported misappropriation accusations were unfounded and aimed at tarnishing her reputation within the party.

The LP leadership countered Opara’s claims, asserting that the party did not raise N3.5 billion for the campaign in any of their accounts. In response, a disciplinary committee has been convened to investigate Opara’s allegations and her subsequent suspension.

Addressing reporters at the party’s headquarters, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, the national publicity secretary of the Labour Party, outlined the disciplinary measures taken against Opara. He announced the formation of a disciplinary committee tasked with probing Opara’s conduct, citing her alleged role in bringing the party into disrepute and disseminating misinformation to the public.

The disciplinary committee, established during an emergency meeting of the National Working Committee, is mandated to ensure adherence to the party’s rules and regulations. Deputy National Chairman, Mrs. Ladi Iliya, presided over the meeting, emphasizing the party’s commitment to upholding integrity and accountability within its ranks.

Opara, in response to her suspension, maintained her innocence and expressed readiness to cooperate with the disciplinary process. She underscored the need for transparency and fairness in addressing internal party matters, urging a thorough investigation into the allegations leveled against her.
