The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has refuted claims circulating in some quarters that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is causing delays in the payment of match bonuses and allowances owed to the Super Eagles during the 34th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Cote d’Ivoire.
Amidst prior assurances from the NFF regarding the approval of N12.5 billion from the federal government for the AFCON campaign, an official expressed concerns over the perceived delay, highlighting potential strains on the relationship with players based on trust.
However, NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, swiftly addressed these concerns, commending the CBN for their prompt handling of payment requests related to the competition. Sanusi dismissed the notion of delays or complications at the CBN and emphasized the unwarranted nature of the speculations.
“That is sheer idle talk without substance. The NFF is grateful to the CBN for the way and manner they have continued to expedite action on payment requests that we have sent to them with regards to this competition. It is unfair for anyone to concoct lies against the institution for whatever reasons,” stated Dr. Sanusi.
He further extended appreciation to the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, for his consistent commitment to the welfare of Nigerian footballers. According to Dr. Sanusi, the minister has played a pivotal role in ensuring the welfare of the main actors in the game.
Amidst the ongoing AFCON, the Super Eagles will be compensated with a qualification bonus for reaching the knockout rounds, adhering to the pre-established agreement with the NFF, which opts for a graduated match bonus as the team progresses in the tournament.
