The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intensified its efforts to combat smuggling activities contributing to the surge in commodity prices, with a recent operation resulting in the seizure of 15 trucks carrying food items in Sokoto State. Abubakar Chafe, spokesperson for the NCS Sokoto Command, revealed that the operation was conducted along the Gwadabawa-Illela road on Saturday, February 17, 2024.
The decision to intercept the trucks was prompted by the significant quantities of farm produce they were transporting, raising suspicions of potential smuggling activities. The seized trucks are currently under the custody of the NCS Sokoto Command as investigations are underway to ascertain the ownership and intended destinations of the intercepted food items.
This operation exemplifies a collaborative effort involving multiple units within the Nigeria Customs Service, including the Sokoto command, the federal operation unit, and the intelligence unit. Such a coordinated approach underscores the NCS’s comprehensive strategy to address smuggling challenges effectively.
