President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate opening of Nigeria’s land and air borders with the Republic of Niger, along with the lifting of various sanctions imposed on the country. This decision aligns with the resolutions reached by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government during its extraordinary summit held on February 24, 2024, in Abuja.
Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, announced the directive in a State House press release dated March 13, 2024.
At the summit, ECOWAS leaders collectively agreed to lift economic sanctions against several member states, including the Republic of Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea. In accordance with these decisions, President Tinubu has instructed the lifting of specific sanctions previously imposed on Niger.
The sanctions being lifted include the closure of land and air borders between Nigeria and Niger Republic, as well as the ECOWAS no-fly zone on all commercial flights to and from Niger. Additionally, the suspension of commercial and financial transactions between the two countries, along with freezes on service transactions and assets, is being lifted.
Furthermore, President Tinubu has approved the lifting of financial and economic sanctions against the Republic of Guinea. This move reflects Nigeria’s commitment to regional integration and cooperation within the ECOWAS framework.
