The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have escalated tensions with the Federal Government by issuing a 14-day nationwide strike notice. The move stems from the government’s failure to implement the 16-point agreement reached between organized labour and the Federal Government on October 2, 2023.
Expressing deep disappointment, leaders of the NLC and TUC lamented the government’s disregard for the agreement despite concerted efforts by organized labour to maintain industrial peace. The agreement, forged to address the severe socio-economic fallout from the price hike of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and the devaluation of the naira, aimed to alleviate the widespread suffering endured by Nigerians.
In a joint statement, the NLC and TUC underscored the regrettable necessity of resorting to strike action, attributing it to the government’s persistent neglect of citizens’ welfare and the enduring hardship faced by the masses and workers alike.
Effective February 9, the Labour Centres declared their intent to commence the strike unless the Federal Government honors its commitments within the stipulated 14-day period. The ultimatum serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address the grievances of Nigerian workers and citizens.
