The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly issued a 5-day ultimatum, demanding the redeployment of the Commissioner of Police in Imo State. This ultimatum comes in the wake of an attack on NLC President, Joe Ajaero, in Owerri, the Imo state capital, on Thursday.
The leaders of organized labor convened a press conference on Friday, November 3, 2023, in Abuja, where they issued the threat and made a series of strong demands, setting the stage for a potential showdown with the authorities.
One of the primary demands put forth by Organized Labour is the arrest and prosecution of the Special Adviser to Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma on Special Duties. They have further warned that if their demands are not met, they will initiate a nationwide industrial action.
The labor unions have not limited their demands solely to the Governor’s office, as they have also called for the removal of the Commissioner of Police, Imo State, the Area Commander, and other officials. They accuse these officials of alleged complicity in the brutalization and humiliation of Ajaero and other workers.
At the heart of this conflict is the attack on NLC President Joe Ajaero, which the union leaders have squarely placed on the shoulders of the Imo State government and the police. Both authorities have, however, vehemently denied any involvement or complicity in the attack in their separate responses on Friday.
Speaking earlier on the matter at the State House in Abuja on Thursday, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State refuted the allegations, asserting that he was not responsible for the attack on Ajaero. He highlighted that it took his intervention to reinstate NLC leaders in his state, who had been suspended and replaced with a caretaker committee.
Governor Uzodimma further contended that Joe Ajaero, an indigene of Imo State, had become embroiled in local politics, a claim likely to add more complexity to the ongoing dispute.
As the 5-day ultimatum ticks away, the nation awaits further developments and responses from the involved parties, with the NLC and TUC poised to take decisive action if their demands go unanswered.
