By Harry Awurumibe, State House, Abuja

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu has said that the security situation in Nigeria has improved significantly as the rate of banditry and other associated crimes have been reduced.

This disclosure was made Tuesday by the IGP while briefing State House Correspondents after emerging from a security meeting at the State House, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to him, “We just concluded Security Briefing now. And during the briefing, we looked at the security situation in the country and we have realized that the security situation in the country is stable.

“Banditry has been reduced to the barest minimum,
kidnapping has been reduced significantly. The epicenter of kidnapping that you know generally that goes on in the North-Western part of the country especially in Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, etc are very all calm now.

Adamu also stated that: “The insurgency in the North East are being degraded and many of the insurgents are surrendering to the authorities and they are giving out, I mean they are giving us their arms and for that reason, we are encouraged to sustain the tempo.

“And the successes are recorded because of the cooperation that came from members of the public including the press because most of have objectively given their assessment of the actual security situation in the country which your followers, of course, agreed.

Said he, “So we have been encouraged to sustain the tempo so as to see that insurgency is greatly degraded or eliminated in the country.

“And then politicians and hunters that are working with us are encouraged to do more and we are encouraged to work more closely with such group to have the information we required and so as to have the support that we required in order to defeat any form of criminality within the country essentially that is what we disclosed”, IGP concluded.

On the plethora of allegations against Nigeria Police meddling in the Governorship elections in Bayelsa and Kogi, Adamu confirmed that police helicopter was deployed on the day solely to deter trouble makers but denied that police were involved in any shady business as every policeman on elections duty carried their tags.
