The presidency on Monday, again countered the narrative in some sections of the media that President Bola Tinubu, on Sunday, stepped aside as the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The first tenure of President Tinubu as the ECOWAS chairman ended officially on Sunday, but some media houses reported that the Nigerian leader stepped aside from the position.
n reaction, the Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, described such reports as fake news. He also lamented the general scourge of fake news in the society.
Particularly, the presidential media aide called out a news outlet for failing to pull down or amend its report concerning Tinubu stepping aside as ECOWAS chairman.
“The scourge of fake news is an epidemic. Despite this news being outrightly false, @nigeriantribune has refused to take it down or even amend their reportage. This is just wild !” the presidential aide lamented.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu has been re-elected as the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), about one year after he took over the regional bloc’s leadership.
Darelasisionline.com reports on Sunday, Tinubu hosted the ECOWAS heads for the 65th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
During the meeting, the Nigerian leader who rose to power in May 2023 was re-elected as the ECOWAS chairman.
Recall that President Tinubu was first elected to the position in Guinea-Bissau on July 9, 2023.
Special Adviser to the President, Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement on Sunday, disclosed that Tinubu’s mandate was extended following the decision of the leaders to ensure continuity and consistency in meeting targets on security, reconciliation, and development.
