The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its decision to ban commercial motorcycles (okada) and tricycles (keke) on major roads in Lagos metropolis. In a statement issued by his office on Friday, the state Deputy Gov. Obafemi Hamzat said that the government was determined to reduce accidents and vices associated with the use of motorcycles and tricycles. Hamzat said that the ban would promote security of lives of Lagos residents. The Oyo State government will, on Monday, name and inaugurate managers for motor parks in all the 33 local government areas across the state. Prof Raphael Afonja, the state Commissioner for Works and Transport, disclosed this while addressing newsmen in Ibadan on Friday. Afonja said that the park managers would be in charge of the N200 revenue collection from each commercial vehicle operating in the state. Two non-academic unions of the University of Ibadan (UI) on Friday commenced an indefinite industrial strike over the failure of the institution’s management to meet their demands. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the unions – Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) – locked the UI gate, thus stalling academic activities in the campus. Yobe Governor, Mai Mala Buni has approved N220.7 million for the payment of retirement benefits to180 retirees from the 17 local government areas of the state. Alhaji Abdullahi Bego, the commissioner for information disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Damaturu.
